Christy has been covering rugby since 2014 after falling in love with the game in 2010 during a year in England. He was employed at Fox Sports from 2015 and worked at News Corp across two stints. During his time at Fox Sports, he was a prolific newsbreaker and published regularly in The Australian. He also covered the Tokyo Olympics for News Corp. Not shy of setting the agenda, he wants to cover rugby from all angles: from Super Rugby and sevens to the international game.

That’s not how journalism always works. Never has. In any news outlet.

Revealed: Foley still in World Cup mix after Australia A call up, Cooper pulls pin as Hooper ruled out

Think more will come to light soon. Pretty sure Eddie said at press conference on Thursday (it was a long day, so i would have to check) but he wanted Quade and Bernard to be battling it out for Australia A to put pressure on him for Wallabies…

Well, I do know that he was furious. But that’s the thing about things on the record and things off the record. As you also know, they come from by barista. I just returned to Sydney today, so it was great to catch up with said barista.

Mate, at no point do I say it’s a bad squad nor state my feelings on Eddie.
Some of the methods around the squad announcement – who was in, who wasn’t – I shared, as I have to Rugby Australia.
Perhaps ask a question rather than write something as a matter of fact. As your assertion was wildly off the mark and nor do I think it could be ascertained from the ‘sole’ pod appearance.

Luka, thanks for the journalism lesson.

Okkkkkk

His “barrow” might be pushed because he’ll be in France for Australia A.

Well, him not playing and being chosen would suggest that. I’ve been told he is. I’ve been told other things, but haven’t included them because I can’t stand it up … for now.
He also would have had to ask his club to play. Let’s not forget, he missed almost an entire season for his club side because he was injured for the Wallabies. Playing for Australia A, outside of an international window, would have been a testing conversation.

To be fair to team in Tonga, they had about 1 1/2 training sessions before taking on Tonga in Tonga. It’s not surprising they were smashed out of the gates and several played poorly.

Of course there’s double standards. From memory, that was in my copy last week and may have even been in a headline too.
No Holloway, Hodge (he’s off overseas at year’s end) would indicate once again he’s turning to the future.
There’s five over 30 in the squad, youngest Wallabies World Cup squad since 1991; chalk and cheese compared to All Blacks. But there’s always exceptions. For instance, there’s five in 33-man squad over 30. That in itself says there are exceptions.
Foley won’t be there unless there’s an injury or two, not sure how that contradicts anything I’ve written anyway.

Mate, hate to tell you, but the official squads don’t actually have to be in until Aug 28.
Secondly, injuries occur and coaches can change the squad as such, but once a player is out – they’re out.
Third, Eddie has a great relationship with Baabaas and will be picking as many as 15 for it. Fourth, he’s chosen the Aus A squad.
Fifth, he’s picked Foley.
Any other questions?

Dislike? Not quite sure where and how you’ve come to that conclusion? It couldn’t be further from the truth. Note, my column following World Cup squad announcement and, to be honest, every single story over the past 12 months.

Donaldson has literally been termed a “utility” player by Eddie Jones in both press releases and in conversation.

👍 didn’t think you were. I’ve spoken to those he knows – players and coaches – and journalists across the world to realise that with Eddie you come to expect the unexpected. He’s a contrarian. He trusts few. Nor does he listen to outside noise. So nothing is unexpected. Everything he says is for a reason – however ridiculous they sound

Sorry Bryan …

Thanks, a new path needed to be taken years ago. Now RA has to get their house in order and invest in its grassroots and back the people they’ve put in place to succeed.

Lol. I don’t think you understand how that works.
Plenty of critique – and on the receiving end of some Eddie bombs too.

Well, I wrote this a month ago. Similar tone, but it’s not like I’ve moved away from my thinking. https://www.theroar.com.au/2023/07/10/vision-as-important-as-selection-after-physical-and-mental-battering-and-it-could-mean-following-frances-19-rwc-path/

It was interesting that Tate made two early linebreaks against Scotland last October at Murrayfield and yet found himself out of the side a week later. That was his first start all year and first minutes in a month. Didn’t understand selection at times under Rens.

Agreed.

Interestingly, Junior Wallabies had best result in a generation by making final in 2019. Then Covid. Some promise this year.

Hi Paul, thanks for the comment. I’m fortunate to be heading to Paris August 22. Can’t wait.
Thanks for reading and engaging.

👍 The other ones are straight news reports. This is more speculative. No fun task putting yourself in Eddie’s mind 😂
