I had a small bet on Aussies ($8 odds) and a bigger bet on England last week, so I am happy I will be alive in the WC final. Sadly I love to bet, but football betting is a rarity for me. Go Aussies.
Gustavsson's gamble: Hold 'em against England, or go all in on Sam Kerr?
I don’t think Kerr can be expected to play at her best given recent injury. But i sure hope she does and has a blinder.
Good thing there are ten other good players on the field, and the English may give Kerr too much attention which helps free up our other players. Go Aussies.
Gustavsson's gamble: Hold 'em against England, or go all in on Sam Kerr?
yes, he was very good. I have to apologise about not knowing about his previous record prior to Celtic. That is the trouble with being a generalist and follower of too many sports, you can easily not know enough of the detail.
What the EPL?!: Ange's big day, Claret blues and trouble at the bottom on opening weekend
I thought saints looked good early, and seem to be again playing very well at present. But, would not surprise me either way, that they do well or go out in straight sets. It is that kind of year.
Are perennial losers St Kilda set to break supporters' hearts again, or is this team different?
Hope Ange does well, but Premier League was tough on previous Celtic manager who moved to Premier League. Ang’s toughest gig yet by a country mile.

Grem, not an easy piece to write about. Not that much research so far, but i think Stu’s topic is pretty important and i want to add to it. But looking around for material, there are some worrying trends for all sports in the suburbs as real spending on sport has declined since 2001. But, from what i see, football in Sydney has done ok when compared to other sports, albeit there is need for more facilities as Roarers point out.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
lot of good points here. For sure food for thought.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
yes, fair enough. just about timing for me and being forced to build it or else.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
do not disagree with that.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
true, but the new stadium cannot be built in Australia without such help. I am against it in these times.
I also agree the AFL should get less help
But, as I have indicated, local govt is primarily responsible for local amenities, from our rates.
There is no way that the federal government will fund all local grounds.

tassie does not need a new stadium, but AFL is forcing them. tassie has the choice, build or not build.

Hopefully there is some longer term boost to domestic crowds.

some good points there
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
yes, but the federal govt is not responsible for local fields.

Adam, from what i am seeing, Aussie local govts do indeed give a …. about all the football codes. The answers are not easy, but we have to have faith that we can deliver as a society. I, for one, am confident fairness can be achieved, even within a context of limited resources these days.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
Chris, i am not saying there is not a need for more sports facilities. All i am saying is that the issue is complex. Most suburbs already have limited recreational space. What about the reality that rugby fields are more subject to more wear and tear which may make their rationalisation to smaller numbers problematic in terms of ensuring a decent surface. What about the reality that federal govt is already stretched in fiscal terms.

so you think existing ovals in existing suburbs, already saturated with development, should be converted to soccer fields. remember it is local govt that is largely responsible for fields.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
ok, you could provide links that comprehensively show local govt spending. Hard to find, but important given local govt provides half of sports spending.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
obviously, but u have to look. you are highlighting key points. One, local govt provides fields in each area, so locals should lobby council and point out facilities.
And yes, soccer and AFL r just wo sports in our country, and neither have a right to demand anything more than any other sport.

local data workouts how many fields are required per participation.
for example
Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (2008)
Total number of fields not specified.
Fields were allocated to sports as follows (in descending order):
Soccer: 1 field per 4,000 people
Cricket :1 wicket per 5,300 people
Rugby league / union: 1 field per 17,000 people
Baseball / softball: 1 diamond per 22,800 people
Shared use fields: 1 field per 41,500 people
Hockey: 1 field per 68,000 people
Australian Rules: 1 field per 68,000 people
Athletics: 1 track per 76,000 people

yes, maybe. but the argument is that football is less funded than other sports, It certainly is not in my area.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
Grem, data i am finding from local govt is pretty good for soccer when compared with AFL and Rugby, although i am looking at Sydney.
And also in accordance to Local govt aspirations for all sports.
I think these sort of topics do indeed require a lot of research. Gut feeling is football gets a pretty good deal so far, but still early. Look forward to football fans ripping into me, but i will try and be well prepared. I may well end up aggreing with Stu’s sentiment.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
yes, but that is the task of a researcher, you have to find the data as best as you can. And when you cannot, you need to qualify your argument. And with all due respect to Stus’s great writing, this piece does not allude to the realities of defining funding as it makes the mistake of cutting and pasting some data to suit an argument.
I have already learned that half of sports funding comes from local govt.
It may be true that there is unfair funding, but we need to seen and understand the full story beyond big ticket federal and state govt funding which is indeed necessary to fund stadiums.
Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea
yes, i have already stated we need much more analysis. we need total spending by all levels of govt, not heresay.
I look forward to anyone helping with my search.

good match, standard of play was pretty good from both teams. Sweden continue their struggle to get beyond semi finals (now 3 rimes although once runner-up making final), and it showed with their disappointment with many in tears.
